Flying, skateboarding and seeing friends from the past…

Wow, i have been busy lately.

Well not that but in a good way. Me and Brett went up the mountain for some soaring with our Little Clouds. Sadly it was not realy straight on so the lift was not good. I tried a couple of times, got some soaring and a lot of kiting. Brett decided to film and take pictures of me playing.

Then last sunday i drove my Toyota ModelF the 800 km to Vänersborg and Vargön. This is where my mom and dad lives. So i spent some time with them. Realy nice to hang with my parents. I’m a crap son when it comes to visiting and remembering birthdays…

Also i met an old friend i had not seen for 25 years!!! It was epic to see him again. Back in the days we went on interrail together with our skateboards. We had loads of fun on that trip… Nowadays he is a rockabilly and plays in the band Astrolites and drives a Ford Buisiness -49… Cool cat.

After some days in Vargön(Wolfisland) is left for Gothenburg to sell my loved Toyota bus and to visit two more friends.

First evening in gothenburg i needed a skatesession. Me and my good old friend Henrik Wadsten went down to Area 51. This place is fantastic. It’s a gigantic room in a mountain. Inside the rockroom there are ramps and pools of different size and style. A skaters paradise during the cold winter.

We enjoyed the bowl with a backyardpoolstyle corner. Smiling and laughing most of the time we cruiseed around and did our stuff. A couple of hard slams later we had to leave to get Henriks kids. It was about time anyway…

After pizza and wine we checked “Who cares” about and with Duane Peters. A thrilling story of a man who should been dead twice… He still skates like a maniac. Duane Peters is the “master of disaster”. The man who invented the INDY AIR!

Skateboarding is something i will stop doing when i die. It’s still so much fun. Everytime. I started skating in 1977 when my friend Steven Trolin came back from Canada with a plastic skateboard. Hmm, i’m getting all sentimental…

In the mid eighties PowellPeralta skateboards were the shit. I decided to get a replica from those days together for our house. It’s now ready after getting hold of some Independent stage 10, 149(should have been old 151) for half the price at Stadium in Gothenburg. This is my tenth complete skateboard i have at the moment…

Jonna says it’s scary, the graphic. Hmm. I think it’s a beauty ;-)

And yeah i have now sold my fantastic Toyota Model F. An epoch in my life has come to an end. I will miss the trips in my Toyota. Luckily i have the memories. :-)

Henry Rollins is in Sweden(or was), i was not in the right town the dates he did his crazy thing. Check him on Spotify or Itunes. Great fun standup comedian. Used to sing in Black flag.

Jonna had her friend Paula here for some days. Sadly it was superdupercold most of the time she was here. Though they dressed up finnish style and went for it… Cute girls huh?

FOR SALE!!! All You snowboarders, i have a splitboard for sale. It’s a 2000/2001 Voile 159cm splitboard with skins. All u need is bindings and a pair of poles. Today a splitboard costes 11.500 swedish kronor, without skins… I’ll sell this one with skins for 500 euros. It’s in mint condition. Used less then 10 tours.

Thanks for checking in on my blog. See U soon i hope.

Swesport through my eyes and Camera

Categories: Stockholm.

On the 17th of januari i spent the day at Swesport wintersportstrade show at the Kista mässa. I have attended this trade show a bunch of years before. But i still find it amusing to see next years stuff… I realy like new gadgets.

Next years skiis/boards and all the accessories for wintersport activities. It’s all on display there. So i decided to go there for my own this year. Last year i worked for Sportfack, the Swedish sportstrade magazine, and then i was working fullon during this weekend. Now i wanted to stroll around and check out what i wanted to check out:-) Meet the people i wanted to meet. I did most of it this year.

Walking around and endulging the gear, colours and people is entertaining. It’s amusing to follow the different peoples choice of clothes, the way they adress You, the way they check your name and companytag before they come up to You…

But hey, it’s and important tradeshow, orders are taken, and then spending time with someone not intresting is stupid. I understand that. However. Where ever i went i was friendly taken care of and time was taken for me and my questions.

Here’s some goodies in alphabetical order that i liked…

Aclima makes the best merinowool undergarments for us paraglidingpilots, works for all other kinds of activities as well. Ola Skinnarmo, the expedition freak, uses them all the time. I have almost lived in my fullsuit the last two months. Remarkably comfortable, keeping U warm and cosy without the normal bad smell that comes with sweating. Aclima is good stuff!

Christer from Borka trading chilled in his stand after some hard sales… Borka takes care of skateboard brands such as Santa Cruz, Alva, Independent, Cirka shoes, TSG and many more. The board below is a Santa Cruz Meek Slasher09. I want one or two of these.

One of Santa cruz graphics is the old skateboard design from Rob Roskopp, as seen on the right of this picture. Dude on the phone is Janne from Zytt. He used to live in Åre.

Must have walked by the JO sport stand 10 times and it was always busy. Finally in the afternoon i got to talk to Johan awhile. Dynastar skis looks good but most intresting i is their TEKO socks. Very nice merino wool socks for different activities. Check them out.

Lots of nice shoes at Swesport this year. I liked the look of the new Ecco hikerboot, also some shoes from Icebug and especially one model from Inov-8, gtx290 i think it’s called. Forgot to take a picture of them though…;-)

Elan is still around and looking sweet, with the Boomerang rocker ski in the front the future is bright. Hysterical graphics is the shit by the looks of it for next winter. Elan was there with a stand inside and a big rigg outside aswell.

The Swedish glovemaker Hestra has a heated glove on the market. It has a fantastic fit on the hand and the finish is superb. Materials are the by far best available. The price however is abit high to be sold in bigger amounts… 290 euros. I want a pair. Please :-)

Another Swedish brand, Houdini, makes realy nice functionel clothing. First layer to outer clothing. I spoke quickly with Eva and she seamed happy as a bird. Green production and all that offcourse. Looks nice.

Their longings with extra fleece on the knees are among the best for paragliding. Keeps knees warm!

Hookedonnature.se makes a compact berrypicker. hehe You might say but this will sell. Anyone hiking in the Swedish fjells nows that You always miss that picker when running into blueberries or lingonberries. This is a must for everyone who hikes and likes berries. Turn realy small when folded. Swedish product.

I just found the poster intresting since is has a glider in it. The brand Icepeak is a budget clothing brand. Magnus who sells them is a dude i know from my first years working in a sportshop up in Åre(Duved to be exact).

Björn Andersson from sportprodukter is one big boy. So is K2 Obsethed. Fat rockerski for big mountains. Or people who wants to be seen in the liftcues…

All of K2s skis look awesome for next winter. Realy cool graphics. Lots of different rocker on them. On the snowboards as well. How big will rockers go in the ski/snowboard world? I ride a rockerboard and i think it works well, but have not yet tried a ski with rocker. Will try it on telemark as soon as possible.

Sportprodukter also sells Line skis. Some of them have Jim Phillips graphics. Rock’n roll skis for bigmountains and park…

The Finish Bear, Karhu, makes a ski for hunting. Well not meant to be the actuall hunting device, it’s to get You out there and back home. Short and wide, for flotation and easilly manouverable. Kinda cool. Oh yeah they make all kinds of cool xc skiing skis as well…

Kombi gloves is colourfull. Did not ask for details and new modells. Many models, i’m shure there’s good ones there for everyone… My landlord had a glove model last year. Forgot to ask Kombi about it… The Jon Larsson model. Not the Jon Olsson.

This is my absolute favorite brand of alltime! Life is good. It makes me happy just looking at their coofecups, t-shirts and towels. Very inspiring brand and loggotype. What i would like to have on my paraglider… In Sweden they are sold by North 66’s sales rep.

Cold hands is a problem for most paragliding pilots. With Mountain equipments superduper downmitt that problem is gone. For ever, no matter what temperature jumps at You. Very cosy mitts. Highsports with Ola Hillberg is the dealer.

Henrik Harlaut lives in Åre. He’s clothes are to big for him. My green suit is to big for me. That’s were similarities end. Henrik has his own promodel for Ninthward skis. They are made to be jibbed with i guess…

There must be a new designer at Nordica, lots of colours and fun graphics for next years skis. Sverre and Johan are two Swedish extremeskiers who ride Nordicas. The skis on the right picture are pistracers!!! They graphicly look like jibberskis! Nice one Nordica :-)

Norröna was one of my favorites at last years ISPO trade show. I still think they make good looking functional clothing. I checked their goretex suit, a nice overall. Check them out.

When coming in to the tradeshow this is what i see. A Ozone kite in the roof!

Ozone kites was represented at Swesport.

Photographer Bingo Reimer has set up a contest in Stockholm on the 23rd of januari. As a fellow photographer i feel the urge to help him promote him on his quest…;-) www.battleofthepole.com

Around 2000 i had a K2 Eldorado 174 that i sawed into two pieces and put it back together with the help of a Voile Splitkit. I think i was one of the first splitboarders in Sweden. I still have it and ride it now and then. It still works great! It rides ok and is fantastic uphill.

I wrote some articles for Utemagasinet and Friflyt about the spiltboard. I also managed to get my five minutes of fame on TVÅRE, the local chanel. Splitboarding was not widely known. Still isen’t.

Now it’s being brought back into Sweden by Uhrweder Sports, the have Voile, Prior, Scarpa and Spark R&D in their portfolio. I would very much like a Spark R&D Fuse binding(price 3495 skr). It would make my board better in many ways. Lighter, better in ride mode. But hey, while were at it, i want a Prior splitboard(price 11500 skr) too! They look great! Maybe if i win on some lottery…

Quiksilver definitly had the shows biggest shorts. That’s a normal size skateboard next to them…

The wheels on this bike has a reflective powder on them. When photographed with flash they shine. You get it in a spraypaint bottle and it can be sprayed on to anything that needs reflexes. Dogs, people, bikes, walls and soo on. Your imagination is the limit. Realy smart thing. I got a sample and will try it on my Little Cloud glider for some night flights…

Skateout was one of the first skateboard distributers in Sweden. They are still one of the biggest. In their stand DC shoes was the big thang. Lots of them. I forgot to take a photo of their line… Silly me. But they looked good. Most of them ;-)

I wrote about Smith Evolve in Sportfack last year. This year their superlight helmet got a price in “Gear of the Year” and rightly soo. Their superduperlight helmet is not only light and comfy, it’s also recyclable. 100%. Not shure i like the new graphics on the helmet but someone does. I’m shure…

Tomas Breding(translates to The wide one)from Granitbiten showed me the Thermarest Neoair sleepingmat. I tried it on the floor in the stand (Tomas smiled)and it was something else. Very impressive. Comfortable as a good bed and light. Very very very light. Packing volyme is rather small. Price is not small. About 2000 skr… I want one :-). Tomas used to live in Åre.

Direct from Friluftsfabriken in Borås, Tord and Anna. Good friends of mine. Anna used to live in Åre, and Tord used to fly paragliders alot. Even worked at the Apco factory. He told me paragliding had been on hold but now he wanted to get back into it…

Nicklas Tullin works for Oneoff, not Onoff. He sells 32 shoes. Not the amount 32, the brand. He’s from Åre. He’s moved. Wierdo.

Johan Stjerna who is the sales rep for Völkl is enthusiastic and engaged in his scene. Always on it to explain all the details. Can talk for hours… Völkl had some good stuff for next winter. Their superfatty rocker Chopstick looks fun.Oh yeah, Johan lives in Åre.

On the rails…

It’s been a great week, almost been flying every day. Even one day with some soaring. The temperature in the valleys have been horribly cold. Down to -30 celcius. But the last three weeks have had a massive inversion going on. Around -20 in valley and zero degrees on the top! Extreme.

So i tried to stay on the top of the mountain as much as possible. With good company i might ad. Jonna came along on her day of from work. We had a nice and lazy day up in the sun.

Below Nick is flying my G-force. He still said that he wants a Little Cloud…

My landlord Jon Larsson got picked up with a heli the other morning. In his garden, 30 meters from our home. The posh way of going skiing. He went to the top and skied down. It was not very good but flying heli was… ;-)

Peter Sidebo tagged along with his lib tech snowboard.

Heli leaving the premisses in a stylish way.

This is what i like about flying in Åre. Crisp clear cold air and visability unlimited. Yes!!!

Zerowind takeoff from thousendmeter takeoff, Åre, Sweden. My homemountain. :-)

This is the sky when i waited for the skibus back home to the shack.

It was a good day.

Today i took a train  to Stockholm. Me and Jon played cards and chatted the trip away. Much fun was had.

I have now eaten a delicious Ceasar sallad with my good friend Johan Bergqvist. We babbled on for hours and enjoyed a couple of GT’s. (gin and tonics)

I feeling fine but tired beyond belif. Need to sleep to be able to enjoy the Swesport wintersport fair tomorrow. Cant wait. Good night whereerver U are ;-)

Fast flying in extreme conditions, Hot rods and rockabilly…

Åre is alot.

Cold is one of them.

Yesterday me, Micke and Pål flew from Åreskutan. Pål launched from the normal takeoff in crap wind. He made it, but it looked bad.

So we walked to the top at 1420 and had -10 and 3 m/s perfect wind. We launched into lovely air and flew high over the valleys, over the midstation and out over the village. The sky had some intressting inversionclouds that coulds be flown through. It was realy a magic little flight. I flew my little cloud and Micke his Gradient freestyle.

When i had about 200 altitudemeters left it got cold. Very cold. -32 to be exact. My poor nose was the only piece of skin that had to feel the extreme cold, but it was enough. I decided to land close to a warm place. Timmerstugan next to cabinastation was my goal for landing. I got down nice and smooth. Left my kit in the cold and walked in to warm up. It was then i realised that i got zero video from this beautiful flight. Pål got his flight, here’s a link to his film. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WAq3F8B7yPA

It was a nice flight and i like the extreme but not the way Pål does… wierdo :-)

Åre is alot.

Hot is one of them.

Last night it was concert time in Åre. Two bands played in Holiday Club. It was the first Winter Motorkultur. Opening band was Tayler Camp, a country/bluegrass band from Östersund. Me and Jonna got there abit late and only got to hear 3 songs with them. We should have been there earlier, they sounded real fine.

We had the buffe, bourbonglaced ribs, potatoes, coleslaw, sallad, and a beer for 15 euros! We did not leave the table hungry. At least not after one or two refills… ;-) Good rockabillyfood.

After that the Gogetters got on stage. They rocked the house. Sooo good. This is my type of music. Real oldschool rockabilly and some covers of Ramones , Undertones, Clash to mention some. All in rockabilly mode.

It got late an after a fireshow  and a second set from the Gogetters it was one tired Fred that left the building, walking out in jeans, vans, beanie and downjacket, into -32 degrees celcius. Sweet. I felt warm from all the possitive vibes from the concerts, people and food.

Oh, yeah. I bought a new flannelshirt from Depalma Clothing. That’s a cool garment to keep me warm on cold days…

Life is good. Tomorrow i go flying. With charged batteries in more than one way…

It’s been a good year, now bring on a new one ;-)

Yesterday i went up the mountain and got a short but exiting flight with my little coud. Damn that little thang gets me alot more flight than i would have gotten with a normal sized glider…

I walked down quite abit since visability was zero… Sadly because it was soarable on top. I did a launch with the wind coming from the hill so i had to do a reverse and do a quick 90 degree turn and huck of a steep hillside :-)

Flew in tailwind, fast and low. Amusing and scary. Made it over the plateau and flew down to Skysport.

A good way to finish the year. I wonder how the new one will start…

Me and Jonna are very happy to live in the new house, it is perfect for us.

My landlord is a nice dude who dresses like he’s told to. Peak performance sponsors him cause he’s fairly good at skiing ;-)

Tonight Jon and he’s friends are trying to celebrate as many new years as possible… Following the planets rotation or something. I dont think he will ski tomorrow?

Anyway, happy new year everyone

Well i have a hard time at the moment. Getting fatter and lazier by the day. No one to blame but myself.

I’m unemployed. Or selfemployed. Sofar this winterseason i’ve made one tandem… Luckily i have gotten some photos in Crosscountry magazines latest issues so i wont be starving ;-)

A few of my friends are leaving for exotic places like Mexico, Venezuela, Columbia and so on. Good thing i still have the memories from Brazil.

Photos by Xavier the mad frenchie…

Back to my complaining.

It’s between -10 and -20 all the time here in snowy Åre.

It’s dark.

It’s too cold and windy even for my Little Cloud… or atleast i think it is :-(  Probably just me being a wimp. Here’s a little to inspire U and me to go playing, http://www.vimeo.com/5874541

Today i spoke to a Norwegian friend about the next summers xc adventures. I’m ordering a new xc glider for 2010.

I’m about to loose it. Going skateboarding this evening. Indoor local ramp. Keeps me from killing someone, hehe.

I miss flying. Everything else is perfect.

But hey! atleast i have time to finish some videos and by the looks on statistics they are liked. Alot :-)

Check my latest : http://vimeo.com/8405388

After 24 hours on vimeo over 400 had seen it! Highest numbers ever for my films. Makes me happy and proud.

And makes me continue doing films ;-)

Until then, take care, fly hard and have a great new flying year wherever U are :-)

World snowboard day in Bydalen Sweden

Nitro teamrider Jonas Hagström and his merry posse had arranged a snowboarders weekend since it’s the official World snowboard day. Over 130 skiresorts worldwide have united on this day and made it ours!

Jonas has a pro model guitar for Hagströms and promodel for Nitro snowboards. Pretty cool! Photo from ISPO 2009.

Bydalen is a small resort an hour south of Åre, it’s a friendly resort and thats what makes a ski(snowboard)area rise above the rest! They like us boarders.

Today they let snowboarders ride for free. About 120 boarders enjoyed the fresh snow and the minipark, highest ollie contest and lowest carve (limbo) contest. All in all a very good day among friends. Oh, and it was snowing all day long. Nice ;-)

Even my landlord, who happens to be a rather famous skier, went sideways today.

We finished the day with an adventurerun in the canyon of no return. All 4 of us smiled even though some unvoluntary stops was had…;-)

Sorry for the low quality picture. Iphone is not perfect… but still by far the coolest phone.

Fred G, snowboarder for life.

Mi casa. Da chack. Gökboet.

Well it’s not mine. Infact it’s a friends, we are just renting. Good enough :-) If U drive 5km along the old road from Åre towards Duved it’s on the right side beside a yellow oneplane house. Welcome!!!

The dog in the window is Sepe, he’s on vacation at our place until 22nd of december. He’s a nice dog.

Powpow session in Åre today :-)

Powder in Åre, and realy nice and dry snow. 30-40 cm in the steep parts of Lundsrappet. Minus six to seven degrees and no winds… Very nice first day of pow.

Happy Fred,     Proud powderhound.

During the weekend i tried a new snowboard. It’s a Nitro Slash 166 and it’s a board with the model of an oldschool board, but with with modern ideas. Such as S-rocker. The rocker makes it supereasy to ride both onpiste and offpiste. During the weekend it was hard and rather icy pistes, and today it was lovely powder snow! the board stood up to expectations in both occations. It’s just a perfect Åreboard.
I have been riding longboards, around 180cm, for the last ten years and now going down to 166 cm feels abit wierd but the Slash is stable even at high speeds. I guess this have something to do with the fact that it’s 26.7 wide in the waist. Though it does not feel slow from edge to edge. Maybe it’s because the rocker helps to get into turns enven on bulletproof. In steep powder it’s just fantastic, sooo easy to manouver, i havent tried the woods yet but i recon that it will be right at home…

Oh yeah, i bought the demoboard… ;-), just had to have it. Today i was very happy to have it, except when riding lift, i had to turn off my music all the time because of getting questions and compliments about it all the time…;-)

Below U can read what Nitro says about it.

THE NEW SLASH IS FOR THOSE RIDERS WHO WANT TO FLOW WITH THE WHOLE MOUNTAIN, PUMPING EACH PIECE OF TRANNY FOR MORE SPEED AND MORE POWER. JUST LIKE A BIG WAVE SURFER OR POOL SKATER THE SHAPE OF THE SLASH IS DESIGNED TO ENHANCE YOUR RIDING AND YOUR EXPERIENCE. IT HAS A TRADITIONAL SHAPED, ELONGATED NOSE TO PROVIDE PLENTY OF SURFACE AREA FOR FLOATING WITHOUT MAKING THE BOARD HARD TO TURN IN LONGER LENGTHS. THE SET BACK STANCE GIVES A NATURAL FEELING IN POWDER YET VERSATILE ENOUGH TO CARVE UP THE GROOMERS. THIS IS THE TYPE OF BOARD THAT WILL TRANSFORM YOUR RIDING INTO WHAT LEGENDS ARE MADE OF.

I recomend that U try it if U like riding in natural terrain. If park is Your deal there’s probably better tools. For me this type of board is a perfect board. :-)

So please King Bore, bring it on, more snow!!!

Little clouding in sunny Åre, and first snowboard runs of the season.

Yesterday me and Jonna went to Duved for the slopes. One skilift running and it felt nice to carve some piste. Me on snowboard and Jonna on her telemarkskis. after some runs we called it a day and went back for gluewein afterski in our house. Nice to get out and breath fresh air.

Then today, sun and weak winds, another little flight. I started walking from Rödkullen up towards Olympia. Above Bräckeparken a friend came by on his snowmobile and gave me a ride to takeoff at Hummeln.

Luck was on my side and the wind was not good but ok. Northwest wind on westerly takeoff. Launching inte the fresh and beautiful afternoon sun. Flew out over the lake and pulled some big wingovers followed by a swooplanding on the frosen lake. The snow on the lake was 5 cm deep and fluffy. Perfect for sliding on the ice and spraying with abit of powpow ;-)

Made a short film from todays flight.http://www.vimeo.com/7943274

Happy Fred. Again.
